Propyleum (Gateway) at Chester Castle, Crown Courts

Propyleum, Chester Castle & New HQ Building.

In 1786 the architect Thomas Harrison won a competition to rebuild Chester Castle in the neoclassical style. It included work on the prison, courts, shire hall, armoury, barracks and the Propylaeum shown above. This viewpoint is looking behind the gateway with Chester Crown Court behind the camera.

The new round glass building [2009] in the background is HQ, containing apartments looking over the racecourse, a restaurant and a new hotel. It is not fully finished, with scaffolding still in view. It is due for completion in 2009.
Do these two opposite styles of architecture compliment each other? time will tell.
