The Chester Mystery Plays are performed in the city every five years. Based on the Bible stories, the plays were originally written in the 13th century by Benedictine monks at the Abbey of St Werburgh, now Chester Cathedral. Performed by a large community cast under a professional artistic team the 2018 production will be written by Deborah McAndrew, directed by Peter Leslie Wild with music by Matt Baker. The last production of the Chester Mystery Plays, performed in 2013, achieved critical acclaim with a 4 star rating from The Guardian.
