Located near to Northwich in Cheshire, the Anderton Boat Lift is one of the greatest monuments to Britain's canal age and known as the "Cathedral of the Canals". Built in 1875 it was the world's first and is currently England's only Boat Lift linking the River Weaver and the Trent & Mersey Canal. Poynton used to be a thriving mining community. The Anson Engine Museum in Poynton is built on the site of the old Anson Colliery.
